Global Positioning Systems (GPS) involves sophisticated electronic surveying equipment utilizing orbiting satellites to determine the horizontal and vertical placement of objects on the face of the earth. This technology could be used where conventional surveying methods may be too time consuming or the location is very remote (island, harbor, lake, mountains, etc.).
